"Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery. None but
ourselves can free our minds." Bob Marley
As the sun and the moon are essential elements of the life cycle, a combination of both Yin and Yang styles of yoga are essential for a balanced practice.
Vinyasa Flow is derived from the Ashtanga tradition. Sun salutations link dynamic standing poses with the breath. The practice of vinyasa flow encourages the stimulation of yang energy by primarily addressing the muscular tissues of the body.
Yin yoga is derived from Chinese Taoist philosophy and Indian yoga asanas or poses. It's a deep, meditative practice that focuses on gently stretching the connective tissue of the body, allowing moisture to move in to this very dry tissue. This type of practice encourages the flow of Chi, which is also known as Prana or "life force," throughout the connective tissues. So, when we stretch into these tissues and hold the poses for time, we are encouraging the flow of Chi through the meridians. This process helps to create a healthy, supple body and a quiet, peaceful mind.
